I was a little apprehensive when I started reading "A Game of Thrones" because while I love historical fiction, this book was touted as fantasy, and while I've loved certain fantasy books, sometimes they get TOO fantastical. A pet peeve in particular is when I can't quite pronounce anyone's name, but I didn't have that problem and quickly jumped into the story.
And oh, I couldn't put it down. It reads like historical fiction but not a real history. Yet it contains the same intrigues as any history -- politics, sex, heretical issues (of a sort -- you can call it magic, too), mysterious "Others", divided kingdoms, and of course, fights for a throne.
I bought the first book just to see if I liked it, and quickly went back to the book store and loaded my arms down and bankrupted myself buying all the rest. Can't wait to read #2!

Oh, how I love the SOng of Ice and Fire! And how I hate George R.R. Martin's women. Most of them, anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteThe rest of the series is just as fabulous...enjoy it! I'm about to get sucked in to the last book.
Oooh, I can't wait to start reading this series. I bought the set a couple months ago but I've had too many library books. I'm just going to have to put this one on top of the stack.
ReplyDeleteI love the show and I had debated about the books. Now I will have to go hand over my life savings to get them lol.
ReplyDeleteGood to know I'm not the only one who gets peeved when fantasy books are a little too fantastical. I like my magic and fantasy grounded in reality (yes, when it comes to names too)..however ironic that seems. Will give GoT a try - looking forward to catching the mini-series with Sean Bean too; it hasn't been screened yet where I am.
ReplyDeleteI was just telling my granddaughter (17) about this, and she said she has read them all except the last one, and loves them. Guess I will be borrowing them soon!
